The Millworkers of Lockwood – Two Centuries of Struggle

Through vivid personal stories, the walk will examine why there were so many horrendous accidents in the mills and why it was that many of the workforce were children. You will learn how millowners used both the carrot and stick to control the loyalty of their workforce. The area saw the emergence of militant trade unionists, one of whom, Ben Turner, became President of the General Textile Workers Union, while some of Lockwood’s women millworkers were leaders in Huddersfield’s suffragette movement. In addition, the walk will examine the often appalling living conditions of Lockwood’s millworkers as the place became an environmental disaster area. Mention will be made of some of the dark deeds that blighted the lives of the men, women and children on whose backs the fortunes of many Lockwood millowners were made. Keith Robinson's new book, 'The Millworkers of Lockwood', will be launched in a local restaurant at the end of the walk.

The walk starts from Euro Tyres at 1400. The book launch is at 1500 at Grappolo Restaurant, 2 Water St, Lockwood, Huddersfield HD4 6EJ, five minutes' walk away. Free parking is available at Grappolo Restaurant, or at the adjacent Albert St and Water St car parks.
