The Old Booking Hall, Haltwhistle Railway Station
The Old Booking Hall, Haltwhistle Station, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, NE49 9HN
Haltwhistle Railway Station has been described as 'one of the best examples of a Georgian railway station still in use today'. Come and discover the genius of Thomas Edmondson, whose invention of the card ticket in 1838 was quickly adopted across the UK and the world. Issue your own reproduction Edmondson ticket in the 1855 Ticket Office. Hear the special song written about Edmondson, song by local school children. Guided walks, through a pedestrian tunnel to the impressive 'Alston Arches' railway viaduct of 1851 will be available.
It is hoped that the 1901 signal box will be open to visitors. See how far a signaler can see, and learn about mechanical signaling. (Please note, access to the box is via a step staircase)
Remember to have a look at the exhibition, What's for Tea? in the waiting room on the Newcastle bound platform.
At the end of your visit, treat yourself to a cup of coffee in the Water Tower cafe!
