A beautiful Grade 1 Listed church with twelfth century origins. Well worth a visit to see the exceptional pew ends dating from circa 1540 as well as the ancient corbels and gargoyles. We are open to chat and provide teas & coffees on 13th September.

The parish church of St Peter and Paul, Drax is a stunning Grade I listed building with twelfth century origins and thirteenth-nineteenth century alterations and additions. The building was extensively remodelled in the mid-sixteenth century following the suppression of the Augustinian priory at Long Drax (‘Drax Abbey’) in 1535 and the reset figure carvings above the nave arcades and the clerestory windows, are said to have come from the Priory. The current configuration of the pews date from circa 1851 and incorporates 39 different medieval pew ends (circa 1540) and panelling dating from the C16th to C19th. The corbels (inside the church and in the porch) are fascinating C12th carvings. In addition, there is an anglo saxon font and some patches of wall paintings remain visible.
