In an unassuming corner of Newark on Trent, a quiet market town known for its history and a beautiful 12th Century castle, there is a pocket of tradition and pride that those outside the industry might not know about. The School of Musical Instrument Crafts has been resident in the town since 1972. Opened by Principal Eric Ashton at Newark Technical College, it comprised originally of courses in ‘Violin Repairs and Construction’ ‘Piano Maintenance, Repairs and Tuning’ and a ‘Woodwind repairs and restoration’. These courses still exist with the addition now of Guitar making.

Those familiar will know the violin school, piano tuning school and woodwind and guitar making workshops, are all engines of activity that teach students from across the world the art of making quality musical instruments.
