The story of early education in Tewkesbury
Elizabeth Wyatt Hall, Barton Street, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 5RA
The education of children from working class families in Tewkesbury began with the Abbey Sunday School, established in 1788. Dissenters had to wait until 1812, for a Baptist Sunday school and a 'British school', a day school purpose built, to teach children using the method devised by Joseph Lancaster. Extended and altered, now repurposed as a public hall, the school remains substantially as first built. We are opening the building to explore and to host a display of the history of education in the town, from the first grammar school of 1576 to the closure of the British, now the Barton Road, School in 1967.
There will also be a guided walk around Tewkesbury to view the sites of schools which used to serve the town and a reunion event for former pupils of Barton Road School to reminisce and to record their memories.
