The Yorkshire Coast By Rail
The Old Parcels Office Artspace, Railway Station Car Park, Westborough, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO11 1TU
Step back in time and relive the golden age of British seaside holidays in this nostalgic exhibition celebrating memories of travelling by rail to the Yorkshire Coast. Featuring a rich collection of photographs, memorabilia, railway posters and model engines, the display captures the excitement and charm of holidaymaking from a bygone era.
The arrival and expansion of the railways in the late 19th and early 20th centuries transformed coastal towns like Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and Bridlington into some of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations. This exhibition explores how the railways brought the seaside within easy reach of families across the country, helping to shape the culture of summer getaways. Learn how iconic holiday camps like Butlins at Filey even had their own branch lines and stations to serve the influx of eager holidaymakers.
Visitors can also explore the Old Parcels Office itself—originally built in the 1880s as additional waiting rooms to manage the growing crowds arriving by train.
Presented with the support of Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership, this exhibition is suitable for all ages and offers a unique glimpse into the social history of our coast.
