Token Coins in Ewell and Epsom:
Bourne Hall Museum, Spring Street, Ewell, Surrey, KT17 1UF
From Roman times onward, tokens could imitate official coinage, be simple lead discs, take the form of mass-produced counters, or even be actual foreign coins. By far the most interesting are tokens issued by local tradesmen (... and sometimes women), in the 17th and 18th centuries, which give the name of the issuer, as well as their trade, and tell us where they traded.
The talk will also include counterfeit coins, which were passed locally in an effort to deceive both rich and poor alike!
