Tone Dale House
Tone Dale House, Tonedale, Wellington, Somerset, TA21 0EZ
Tone Dale House, was built in 1807 by Thomas Fox. Thomas came to Wellington from Cornwall in the 1760's as a young man to join the woollen manufacturing business of his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Elizabeth Were, and their sons. In his 20's Thomas was appointed as a director and, eventually, when his Were relatives had all died or retired, he became the sole proprietor of the business. The original factory at Tonedale was converted from a grist mill in around 1802 as Thomas expanded his business from its South Street base. Thomas wanted to live nearer to his new factory so had Tone Dale House built just yards away from it.
