A Tour through the Deanery Tower

St Marys Church, Church Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 5DT

  • 13 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

While the tower was built as a gatehouse it has provided both a study, library and bed chamber for many clergymen over the years. Constructed of early handmade bricks it has many decorative features and was completed in 1495

The Deanery Tower is more than just a fine early brick building. It played its part in the difficult days of the Protestant Martyrs and later the forming of the Oxford movement, which argued for the re-instatement of some older christian traditions. Access is via a stone spiral staircase and needs to be taken with care.
