Our volunteers will take you on a fascinating journey through 500 years of history on a guided walk and talk around the castle grounds.

Learn how the castle began as a motte and bailey under the Norman De Warennes. Explore how it was rebuilt over time to become a key Yorkist stronghold in the Wars of the Roses. Hear about its demise after the Civil Wars.
Listen to fascinating stories about key people in the castle’s past, and the role it played in history.

Accessibility details

Please note that the majority of the tour takes place over level paths. However, there are some areas which include some uneven ground. At one point there is the option to follow the tour up approximately 50 wooden steps to the top of the keep. At this point the tour guides can split the group in two to provide a level route option. If you would prefer the level route option, please let the guides know and indicate when booking.
