Towering timepiece: The church clock that has marked the passage of time for more than half a century

Aimed at those with an interest in ancient machinery and/or clock mechanisms, this will be a guided tour of a machine, how it works and an explanation of its history and the history of medieval timepieces in general. This is one of the oldest tower clocks in the country and the one that gave the longest continuous service in the same location. It uniquely records the changes of metal working techniques over its lifespan as well as the technological advances in chronology over the years.

- Meeting up In the nave of the Parish Church of St Mary and St Eanswythe. The ungated churchyard is easily accessible from the public highway. The ancient floor of the church is uneven in places, so care needs to be taken when walking on it. Nearest station: Folkestone Central (25 minute walk to venue) Buses: any that go to Folkestone bus station (5 minute walk to venue) Nearest parking : ASDA multistorey ( 5 minute walk to venue) but there are a few steps at West Cliff Gardens , alternatively at either end of the Precinct you can follow the path towards the church. Not too steep, walk slowly and you won’t get breathless, access with any walking or mobility aids you might normally use.
