Town Hall, Stratford-upon-Avon
Sheep Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, CV37 6EF
A Town Hall has occupied the present site since the 17th century. Comprising of an open trading area at street level with the main hall above. This early building, which was severally damaged during the Civil War when gunpowder ignited in a store room, was totally replaced by the present structure in the mid 18th Century.
The street level was initially retained as a trading area, but later was enclosed and glazed to create the lower chambers that are seen today.
A devastating fire in 1947 badly damaged the structure, but following careful restoration and conservation works, the building was fully restored by the following year.
