Ugly by Design - Arts Central Studios – Architect Talk
Arts Central Studios, 18-20 Burners Lane, Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK11 3HB
Housed within one of Milton Keynes original warehouse buildings, Arts Central Studios is the city’s largest community of artists and is a collection of over eighty studios.
Constructed in the 1970s, the building formed part of a complex of Advanced Factory Units, designed by renowned architect Derek Walker. The innovative design anticipated the need for adaptability as it was anticipated there would be a variety of future uses for these structures.
As some of the first structures built for the new city, they formed part of the original urban landscape of Milton Keynes and while other buildings have been removed or renovated, the building housing Arts Central remains today much as it was when it was erected.
Join us over a drink from the bar for a conversation about these fascinating places. We will be looking back to talk about how and why they were built the way they were, and how they were originally used. We’ll also be discussing how the building has been adapted for its current use as artists’ studios and a public venue but also looking forward to the future to discuss how such places could evolve.
The conversation will take place in Arts Central Studios public venue, The Box Arts Club, which is the latest element added to the building, and which will also be displaying the exhibition of studio holders’ art for Heritage Open Days.
