  • Multiple dates available
  • | In person
  • | Pre-booking required
  • | Walk / Tour

A working photography studio operating from the same purpose built site since 1867. W.W. Winter has retained much of its heritage which will be displayed throughout the building, along with examples from our extensive image archive.

Through this year’s theme of Every Day Histories, we will be exploring some of the images held in our extensive archive of over a million negatives. The Winter Collection represents a unique record of people, places and things relating to Derby and beyond, since the business was established in 1852. Many of the negatives chronicle every day events in the ordinary lives of working people.

See the changing face of Derby, not just through photographs from the start of our business, but those from more recent time; the newly built Royal Infirmary juxtaposed with the building of Willington power station, similarly the Arboretum juxtaposed with images of River Gardens.

You will be able to tour our Victorian building, which is an architectural jewel in itself. See the original showroom, first and second-class waiting rooms, original daylight studio, in addition to the rooms which were home to backroom functions, such as retouching and framing.

Our knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to provide information about each room, and QR codes* provide an additional level on information about specific objects or rooms.
