Walkley: Sheffield Buddhist Centre past, present and future
Howard Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S6 3RT
Buildings have lives of their own. They have a past, present and future and live within their
local communities. Many people will have memories of the nuns of St Joseph’s convent but may
never have been inside. The buildings here have a long history: as a grand Georgian residence for
the growing middle class of the industrial city; a Reformatory for girls; a place of worship for the
poorer Catholics of Sheffield; a hospital for mentally ill patients which closed in 1983. It was
purchased by the Triratna Buddhist community and is now a thriving centre for Buddhist learning
and activities.
Have you ever wondered what the inside of a Buddhist Centre looks like? Or maybe you
remember it as a convent and hospital. Our event will allow visitors a glimpse of the ever-changing
lives of buildings and their importance to local communities by showcasing the architectural and
social history of the many buildings that have existed on the St Joseph’s site through photographs,
architectural drawings and plans, guided tours and the living memories of local residents. We will
invite visitors to record their memories of the buildings and investigate architectural features and
themes that can be seen in other open buildings in Walkley such as stained glass and changing
fashions in windows and doors. We will demonstrate the continuing life of the buildings in our
plans for a sustainable future for the Centre.
