Weaste Cemetery Tour and Community Event
Weaste Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Eccles New Road, Salford, Greater Manchester, M5 5NR
Weaste Cemetery (Grade II) is the oldest of Salford's four municipal cemeteries. Opened in 1857 Weaste has over 320,000 interments across 39 acres. The cemetery layout and burial provision originally conformed to nineteenth century Government legislation which laid down national regulations and standards for burial. Under this legislation the cemetery provided areas for subscription (common) graves and the three major Christian denominations. Whilst the original denominational mortuary chapels are lost the cemetery has a fascinating range of monuments, from the humble to the grand, several of which are nationally listed. This includes the imposing monument marking the vault of Joseph Brotherton Salford's first M P.
The 2026 Heritage Open Days 'working lives' theme will form the basis of a guided tour. Following your tour, there will also be the opportunity to locate family graves with the help of Salford's Bereavement Services, who will be available on the day. Visitors will be able to see the results of a recent community project to uncover some common grave headstones, long since turfed over, and to view the proposed plans for the gatehouse reinstatement along with other cemetery improvements. Following the initial tour there will be refreshments and the opportunity to ask further questions. The Weaste cemetery guide will be available for visitors who wish to explore additional areas of interest both following the tour or on subsequent visits.

The major routes through the cemetery are accessible by foot and wheelchair. The planned walks involve grassed areas which could be difficult for some. As with most historic cemeteries visitors should proceed with care and wear appropriate footwear.
Adequate car parking is available within the cemetery. As there is limited shelter in the wider cemetery visitors should come prepared for the possibility of inclement weather and wear sensible shoes. Seating will be available on the major driveway and meeting area. We welcome dogs on a lead.
