Back in the middle of the 20th Century Leyland and Farington were one of the biggest towns in Lancashire that employed over 34,000 people in various industries, most of which have now disappeared, all that we have left are the workforces memories.

In 2018 the Leyland Historical Society began a project to interview as many of the ex employees that were still around from the various industries, like Leyland Motors for buses and trucks, three different rubber companies, four cotton mills, a paint works, a bleach works, engineering works and many smaller concerns. When we started the project the guide we initially produced listed 27 sites relating to industry in the town, in a later edition this rose to 55 sites. Following the 340 interviews undertaken so far, the number of sites has now risen to 143.
One of the aims of the project was to provide school children the chance to interview their parents and particularly their grandparents to see why they moved to Leyland, where they worked and what they did.
