BFI Film & Television Archive

B F I National Archive, Kingshill Way, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, HP4 3TP

See the specialist skills, technology and vaults preserving the film and TV heritage of the nation. We'll be hosting talks, demos, exhibits and mini-tours, all celebrating the National Collection and those integral to making it a world-class archive.

Following the success of previous years, the British Film Institute will open the doors to the John Paul Getty Jnr Conservation Centre for another year, providing rare access to the specialist skills, technology and stores which support the conservation of the BFI National Collection.

This year's Heritage Open Days event will include film inspection, video and television preservation, BFI Reuben Library, BFI Replay (streaming video platform), curatorial talks, Special Collections, digital preservation, collections development, mini tours of our film vault and a demonstration of the history of projection in our theatre*. All of our displays will encompass this year's theme of Creativity Unwrapped.

Our friends from the Hospice of St Francis will be on site selling plants and refreshments so you can relax with tea and cake after your visit and help to support an essential local charity. We will also be welcoming back the Skulls & Robots pop-up art shop who sell handmade items at affordable prices and providing some activities for children.

*As this demo is held in our theatre, spaces are strictly limited so tickets will be issued by the steward each hour. Sadly not everyone who attends will have the opportunity to see this and your patience and kindness towards our hard-working volunteers is appreciated.

This event took place in September 2023 and the entry is now archived.
