Eastnor Castle: James Hervey-Bathurst
My Heritage Open Days
Our house is a 200-year old mansion in the style of a mediaeval castle. The visitors see the state rooms of Eastnor Castle on the ground floor and a selection of guest bedrooms and bathrooms on the first floor. They also visit the grounds and can walk around the lake. We do not organise any special event for the day, but aim to have up to four guided tours in succession. I tell them about the history of the house and its collection, but also what it is like living there and how the house is used day-to-day.
Why I take part
I am keen to encourage local people to visit: as we usually charge for admission, they are the most attracted by the offer of a tour and no entry fee. I hope they may then want to return with their friends and relations. I am also on the Board of Visit Herefordshire and like to set an example to other attractions in the county.
It feels good when a group gives a round of applause at the end of my tour.
Advice to first-time participants
The more you look forward to it and enjoy it, the better the visits will be and the happier the visitors will feel.
