The architecture of chocolate
Liam's choice:
I have a soft spot for food history and obsession with all things chocolate, so this event is perfect for me. Chocolate is such an integral part of daily life (for me at least!) and there is so much fascinating architectural history behind it – think factory floors, shops, transport routes, cocoa farms and international systems of movement. I associate the history of chocolate with lots of colourful packaging and tasty treats, but chocolate isn't without its challenges, it has a complex history of extraction and inequality and a future that hinges on ensuring it is sustainable and equitable for years to come. This event invites curious minds to come and engage with this complex world and it sounds like a brilliant chance to learn more about all things cocoa. Sign me up! The good, the bad, and the still ugly!
Alex's choice:
I always make sure to keep an eye out for Headstone Manor, as they are guaranteed to create a tempting title as part of their event… 2025 certainly doesn’t disappoint. This September delve into Harrow’s architectural past and explore ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ of Harrow’s Local History Collection. Discover the fascinating journey of their archives through various buildings—some better than others—and learn about the improvements they've made to preserve some of their fascinating objects. Bricks, bugs & backstories
Charlotte's choice:
I will take any excuse to get outside and explore, but the chance to see a site that has been reclaimed by nature and is now a haven for wildlife really caught my eye. So why not join Dobcroft Nature Reserve for a deep dive into the architectural legacy of the brickworks that once shaped the area and the landscape you see today. From interactive guided walks to hands-on activities, this event offers a unique opportunity to connect with the story of Dobcroft, where architecture, community, and nature converge. All at sea!
Sarah's choice:
One of the (many) things I love about our festival is the stories – discovering new nuggets of local history right on our doorsteps all across England. This exhibition in a local chapel will highlight some of our maritime tales – from the childhood of a famous Elizabethan explorer (aka a pirate!) to the Victorian Admiral who laid the first transatlantic cable. An exhibition like this is just the start, their event description alone is already enticing me to explore the wider area, and look for interesting carvings in a neighbouring church that include a submarine! The Mythstorians
Jade's choice:
Looking through our directory ‘The Mythstorians’ stood out to me due to the intriguing title and image – who doesn’t see a spooky picture with a caption that begins with ‘A ghostly figure’ and immediately want to find out more? The event is an interactive exhibition bringing to life the local folklore, myths and legends of Leicestershire created by ‘The Mythstorians’ (aka residents of YMCA Leicestershire). From ghosts and bogeywomen to curses and cautionary tales, I can’t wait to dive into Leicestershire’s folklore this September! (Image: Y Theatre)
