Discover the secrets of Chester Castle

As part of the 2025 Heritage Open Days Festival, English Heritage are offering exclusive free guide tours of Chester Castle at 12:00 noon on 16, 18 and 19 September. You will visit the 12th-century Agricola Tower. Climb up the first floor to the Chapel of St Mary de Castro, which contains some exceptionally fine wall paintings from about 1240. Then onto the tower roof for spectacular views of the city and beyond.
Please note there is a spiral staircase to the Chapel and roof. Please arrive 15 minutes early at the main gate into the castle. The tour is suitable for ages 8 and above, dogs welcome on leads and donations are welcome. After your tour why not browse through our second hand bookshop.

We are looking forward to meeting you at Chester Castle . You will be met by a member of the team on arrival. We kindly ask you to arrive 15 minutes before your tour is due to start. Please provide your name on arrival. Please note – the Agricola Tower Chapel is accessed by a spiral staircase . We advise wearing sensible footwear. A portaloo is available for use Entrance to the castle can be found through the Chester Crown Court Car Park. There is a charge to park - £5 all day parking, alternatively you can park at the Little Roodee carpark.
