A photographic exhibition to celebrate the architecture of George Skipper and A.F. Scott in Cromer
Cromer Museum, 4, Tucker Street, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 9HB
Augustus Frederic Scott was a freethinking individualist and active in Cromer as town surveyor/architect during Cromer’s rapid expansion from 1890 to 1900. Scott was an unusual architect who mixed pioneering building techniques and materials with the traditional. Working in a variety of styles he undertook both small and large commissions. He frequently travelled independently with a fascination for North Africa, Italy and Spain, which is reflected in some of his designs.
George Skipper was active in Cromer from the late 1880s through to the 1930s. He designed seven hotels, notably the Hotel de Paris, overlooking Cromer Pier. George was also the architect for a range of residential properties in the town, along with Cromer’s first Town Hall and Kingston House, comprising striking residential and business premises just behind the seafront.
This exhibition is part of an A.F. Scott /George Skipper day celebrating their architectural contributions to Cromer. There are also walks on George Skipper led by Paul Dickson (a tour guide) and A.F. Scott led by Judith Merrill (a great-granddaughter of A.F. Scott)
