Cromer surveyor and architect A.F. Scott, (1854-1936) left a legacy of hotels, houses, shops, public works & churches. Hear fascinating stories, explore his architectural styles on a walk with his great granddaughter, holder of the Scott archive.

Augustus Frederic Scott was a freethinking individualist who was active in Cromer as the town surveyor/architect during Cromer’s rapid expansion. He was an unusual architect who mixed pioneering building techniques and materials with the traditional. Working in a variety of styles he undertook both small and large commissions. Scott frequently travelled independently with a fascination for North Africa, Italy and Spain, reflected in some of his designs.

The son of a Primitive Methodist minister and a deeply religious man, his commitment to the non-conformist church brought many church and chapel commissions across East Anglia and beyond and patronage from non-conformist clients. He refused work which he felt compromised his beliefs.

The walk takes approximately 105 minutes to include twenty buildings from fashionable hotels of the day, to flamboyant houses, shops, civic buildings and churches. The final building will be the Grade II listed Methodist Church (previously Wesleyan Church) where free refreshments will be served, with possibly an opportunity to look inside, and ask any questions.

The guide will be Judith Merrill (great granddaughter of A.F. Scott) who has inherited a large Scott archive. This walk is part of an A.F. Scott /George Skipper day celebrating their architectural contributions to Cromer. There is also an exhibition of photographs of their work at the museum and walks led by Paul Dickson on George Skipper.
