George Skipper in Cromer
Meet outside Cromer Museum, Church Street, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 9HB
Dereham born architect George Skipper worked on projects in Cromer from the late 1880s through to the 1930s. He designed seven hotels, notably the Hotel de Paris, overlooking Cromer Pier, along with lost hotels, The Grand and The Metropole. George Skipper was also architect for a range of residential properties, plus Cromer's first Town Hall and Kingston House, comprising striking residential and business premises just behind the seafront.
Skipper is renowned as the architect of a series of standout buildings in Norwich. Sir John Betjeman wrote of him: 'He is to Norwich rather what Gaudi was to Barcelona.'
The walk is part of an A.F. Scott/George Skipper day celebrating their architectural contributions to Cromer. There is also an exhibition of photographs of their work at Cromer Museum and walks led by Judith Merrill (great granddaughter of A.F. Scott) about A.F. Scott's buildings.
