A Tour of the Ancient Architecture of Thornborough’s Southern Henge

Thornborough Henges, North Yorkshire, West Tanfield, North Yorkshire, DL8 2RA

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking preferred

Thornborough’s Southern Henge was built by our Neolithic Ancestors and is set within an ancient landscape dating back over 6,000 years. This tour takes you on a voyage back in time describing how the henge was built and why it is so significant.

The late Neolithic people were great builders using the most basic of tools to create the unique triple henge alignment at Thornborough. However around the site of the southern henge are architectural remains of ancient monuments from the early Neolithic through to the Bronze Age. This tour describes how the various features of the site were built and something of the people who built them.

Near the southern henge is a rare early Neolithic triple ditch barrow and visitors will hear about how and why it was built and how it was instrumental in the positioning of the later henges. As well as hearing about how the henges were constructed visitors will learn more about their design and what makes them unique.

Near the southern henge, the Bronze Age saw the construction of the now buried longest double pit alignment in the UK and the remains of the Centre Hill barrow. The tour will explain how these features were built and what was found when they were excavated. The southern henge is the only henge of the three where evidence has been found of later use with both Roman and Medieval artefacts found within it.

The tour will explain the later use of the southern henge and what they have been used for in more recent times.
