Bob's Lowestoft High Street Blitz Walk

The Lodge, Belle Vue Park, Yarmouth Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 4AL

  • 13 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A fascinating guided tour through some little-known aspects of Lowestoft's chequered wartime history with one of East Anglia's foremost air-war experts. An opportunity to see how enemy action affected North Lowestoft in two World Wars.

Lowestoft, Britain's most easterly town, was targeted by the Germans in both World Wars. During the Great War (1914-1918) Zeppelins, seaplanes and German warships bombarded the town.

In WW2 Lowestoft suffered a bombing ordeal out of all proportion to its size and importance. Between 1940 and 1944, 105 raids took place, bringing about much death and destruction and damage to 75% of the properties in the Borough.

Historian Bob Collis has made a special study of the effect of the wartime attacks. In this special HODs guided "Blitz Walk" Bob uses data from his extensive archives to highlight some of the unfortunate sites wrecked by Hitler's bombs or the Kaiser's shells in time of conflict.

The tour also includes a brief overview of the Lowestoft Town Hall restoration project.

Following the tour, the Lowestoft and District Independent Archive (LADIA) will be open adjacent to the Triangle Market and the Heritage Skills Market.
