Brightholmlee Methodist Chapel was founded in 1807 and has been open and in continuous use for Christian Worship from the day it opened. It was established by Thomas Holy, a silversmith and button-maker, and a friend of John Wesley.
On your visit you’ll find out more about this historic part of Sheffield and you can chat to local history experts; there’ll be fascinating displays and you’ll discover the legend of the Wantley dragon who roamed Wharncliffe Crags centuries ago!
We’re putting together a history of the village to discover what were the buildings in the past, who lived here and what are their stories. Have you got any documents or objects relating to the area? Bring them along and we’ll help piece together their history and significance.
There many old trades and crafts associated with Wharncliffe Side, such as wheelwrights, blacksmiths, swill or tub manufacturers, nail makers, and razor and file makers – did your ancestor work in any of these trades, either locally or in the wider Sheffield area?
We’ll also be launching the new Wharncliffe Side Local History Group, so if you live in the area or have ancestors from here, come and find out more about your family history. Bring your stories and let’s help fill in the gaps.
There’ll be a children’s ‘show and tell’ table and mystery historic artefacts for you to handle and identify – can you name them all?
