Canterbury Friends Meeting House Open Day
6 The Friars, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2AS
Quakers (Members of the Religious Society of Friends) have been meeting in Canterbury since the earliest days in the middle of the seventeenth century. Although the original, very old Meeting House on Canterbury Lane was destroyed in a Luftwaffe air raid on 1 June 1942 (part of the Baedeker Blitz), the current Meeting House offers visitors the peaceful atmosphere of a Quaker place of worship. The Meeting House is open to the public, including the Meeting Hall, the library, and the children's room. The garden, beside the River Stour, part-bounded by old Quaker gravestones, is a delightful place to sit in contemplation.
This year, we have some new exhibition material on display in the Meeting Hall for the Heritage Open Day. Our exhibitions underpin the commitment to 'faith in action' with displays showing our work in Palestine, our activism at home, our concern regarding climate justice, and our local support of refugees.
There will be children's activities in our garden and an exhibition in our library related to the theme of architecture.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy refreshments and musical entertainment.
Quakers will be available for discussion and to answer questions.
