Discover the birthplace of famous artist, engraver and naturalist Thomas Bewick, nestled in the Tyne Valley. With an accessible garden and an unrivalled collection of his work, Cherryburn is surrounded by the natural world that inspired his work.

This unassuming Northumbrian farmstead is the birthplace of famous artist and naturalist Thomas Bewick.

Bewick is perhaps Northumberland’s greatest artist: a wood engraver and naturalist who revolutionised print art in Georgian England. Cherryburn is set in a tranquil, accessible garden with stunning views across the Tyne Valley.

Discover Bewick's birthplace cottage and farmyard, plus a traditional 19th century farmhouse - the later home of the Bewick family, now a museum - with an unrivalled collection of his work and an exhibition about his life.

Explore our newly renovated garden, now more accessible for wildlife and people, including the provision of more seating, new wheelchair-friendly and pushchair-friendly paths and a silent space. Picnic on the lawn and relax in surroundings barely changed since Bewick himself was there.

View an exhibition by Master Engraver Chris Daunt - Beasts, Bewick and Me. The work, exhibited in the Museum at Cherryburn, is inspired by Chris’s interest in animals and nature - an interest Bewick passionately shared. This exhibition, where Chris’s subjects mirror those of Bewick, is an opportunity to see the similarities and differences at play between contemporary engraving and that of the 18th century. It is a conversation across time.
