Dean Road cemetery, which opened in 1857,was designed by J P Pritchett and Sons a practice which was one of the foremost specialists in the design of cemeteries at the time. It is also the burial place of several people such as architects, engineers and builders, who were influential in the development of 19th century Scarborough. Chris will start the guided walk with a look the history and the architecture of the cemetery and its buildings. He will then guide us round some significant memorials to architects, engineers and builders. The tour will then pass through into Manor Road cemetery laid out in 1870 a very different way by Leonard Thompson, look at some more memorials. In this area we will look ay buildings by the highly regarded local architect Frank Tugwell, heavily influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement

The cemetery paths are accessible to all but the tour will go off these amidst the headstones, there are accessibility issues here For today toilets will be available in the Bothy
This guided walk is part of the Dean Road/Manor Road cemetery Heritage Day look out for the separately listed entry. People wanting to go on the guided walk are asked to sign up at the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society's mini-digs stall For today, refreshments and toilets will be available in The Bothy which is within the south-west corner of the cemetery
