Discover Ecclesfield's Story: The Heritage Trail
St Mary's Church, Priory Road, Ecclesfield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S35 9XZ
Join Ecclesfield Together at St Mary's Church and discover the newly launched Ecclesfield Heritage Trail – a unique way to explore the village's rich and layered history.
As one of the oldest settlements in South Yorkshire, Ecclesfield is home to a remarkable collection of historic buildings, public landmarks and hidden gems that reflect its evolution from a medieval parish to a thriving 21st-century community.
Through a series of specially designed heritage plaques, residents and visitors are invited to journey through time, exploring locations of historic and cultural significance across the village. From the medieval church and historic cruck barn to iconic inns such as The Greyhound and The George & Dragon, each plaque celebrates the stories, architecture and people that have helped shape Ecclesfield.
Many of these locations hold special memories for local residents. The Heritage Trail has been developed not only to highlight the village's history but also to preserve and share the lived experiences of its community. Visitors can access additional information, photographs and local stories through QR codes on each plaque and are invited to contribute their own memories.
Visit St Mary's Church to learn more about the project, view information displays and collect a Heritage Trail leaflet to explore the route independently. Alternatively, join one of our free guided tours departing from St Mary's Church at 12:30pm and 2:00pm on both days (approx 1 hour, no need to book)
