Discover Stirchley Community Church (formerly Stirchley Institute)
Hazelwell Street, Birmingham, West Midlands, B30 2JX
Explore the building now known as Stirchley Community Church. It has been at the centre of Stirchley since being built by Richard & George Cadbury in 1892 as a Friends Meeting House & community resource for the people of Stirchley. To many local people it is better known as Stirchley Institute where young people met and formed relationships which often led to marriage.
From 1913 – 1919 it was used by Birmingham City Council as a Day Continuation College for Cadbury employees.
In 1908 an upstairs room was used as Stirchley’s first cinema.
The main upstairs room has a maple floor and was used for dancing and social events for many years. There was a snooker hall on the ground floor.
Cadbury’s regained the building in 1919 so it could continue to be used for political meetings. Votes for Women meetings were held including May 1910 when Christabel Pankhurst addressed a large meeting. Election meetings were held regularly.
In 1973 Cadburys decided that the building was surplus to requirements.
Stirchley Elim Pentecostal Church were seeking premises and acquired the building in May 1974. They have looked after it and made it available to local groups ever since.
The building will be open to view.
There will be local history exhibits from organisations including Stirchley History Group and Cooperative History Group.
There will also be a sale of second hand local history books. Bag a bargain!
Light refreshments (beverages, soft drinks and cakes) will be served (donations welcome).
