In 1936, eccentric millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld decided to build their magnificent art deco mansion right next to the medieval Great Hall of Eltham Palace - creating a masterpiece of modern interiors. Come and visit this open weekend!

Eltham Palace has a history dating back around 1,000 years. It has seen a host of transformations, from its origins as a medieval palace to a royal Tudor nursery, and most recently, an iconic Art Deco party mansion. This Free Open Weekend invites visitors of all ages to explore this fascinating fusion of history, architecture, and design - all nestled in stunning historic gardens. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of kings such as Edward III and Henry VIII as they marvel at the medieval great hall, or meld into the 1930s glamour inside the party mansion.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, architecture lover, or simply looking for a memorable day out with friends or family, Eltham Palace offers something truly special. This rare opportunity allows the public to experience one of London’s hidden gems without an admission fee.

Directions:
Please be aware that Eltham Palace and Garden's have two visitor entrances. Our main entrance, which includes the visitor centre and car park, can be found on Court Road, SE9 5NP. Visitors arriving by car are able to the follow brown tourist signs to our visitor centre. We are located a short walk from Mottingham station and Eltham station, as well as a short walk from Eltham highstreet which is served by local buses.

Accessibility details

Access to first floor of the place is via a lift. Access to the basement is via steps only. Slopped grass pathways provide access to the lower moat.
