Often referred to as Maldon's secret garden, the Friary Walled Garden is guaranteed to surprise everyone who encounters it for the first time, for it is an unexpected green oasis nestling amidst the concrete and tarmac of the town centre. It is small, just one fifth of an acre, but laid out as it is with narrow footpaths and box hedges defining the individual planting beds. Its seclusion derives from being bounded to the north, east and west by a high wall of brick and stone which may be eighteenth century in origin. The southern border of the garden is defied by the buildings of the Friary itself.
It is through the dedicated and enthusiastic efforts of Maldon and Heybridge Horticultural Society to restore the garden that we can enjoy it in its present condition. The garden had become extensively overgrown following some years of disuse and consequent neglect prior to being formally given over to the Society's care in the summer of 1987 since when the Society has been the garden's official custodian. This little garden is NOT a town park. The garden is a working garden with a formal Georgian layout overlaid by a wild cottage type garden.

Accessibility details
The paths are gravel, so may be difficult for wheelchairs, we do get pushchairs in the garden. There is a public toilet nearby. Refreshments will be available on the High Street, a two minute walk. The Whitehorse carpark is next to the library and the Friary Walled Garden is on the other side of the library.
