Snapshots of Working Lives in Quay Street Walk

The walk begins outside the museum next to the station. Quay Street was the hub of the town and The Quay was a busy, bustling place. The street was a hive of activity with shops, businesses and a variety of occupations. Discover more about maltsters, doctors, shopkeepers, merchants, a cycle agent and an Inspector of Nuisances! At The Quay, keels and wherries were coming in and out loaded with merchandise and passengers. Wherrymen had an important role to play. It was a tough, physically demanding job. Wherries moved heavy loads including grain, coal and bricks along the Navigation. Limekiln workers faced harsh and dangerous work. Powdered lime was in high demand in agriculture and building. Brickmaking was closely tied to local clay deposits and Blyth Navigation provided the perfect means to export bricks and import coal.
