Guildford Model Engineering Society Open Day
Stoke Park, London Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU1 1TU
Guildford Model Engineering Society (GMES) was founded in 1954 and moved to the current site at Stoke Park in 1958. A new clubhouse was built in 1961 with a 4mm/00 gauge layout being installed in 1963. After the initial basic miniature railway track, a dual gauge track was built, complete with steaming bay, engine shed and station in 1972. A larger gauge track and station was opened in 1990.
The clubhouse was enlarged in 2008 and a workshop built in 2012. A new engine shed has been built and various ongoing improvements made. In the grounds, a 16mm Garden Railway was built and has been enlarged and improved and a Gauge 1 layout constructed. GMES has a good selection of various gauge locomotives and stock to run on the open days and for driver training.
GMES runs STOKE PARK RAILWAY with 16 Public Open Days throughout the year, plus special interest events/meetings and birthday parties, one open day is a charity day. Visitors to the Heritage Open Day will be able to see most of the usual open day events taking place but will also be able to view a short history display about GMES and members will be available to explain about the society and its activities.
Guildford Model Engineering Society has over 200 members who can involve themselves in all activities of GMES. The society holds various activities, talks and events for its members. New members are always welcome (even those who are not model engineers).
