Halifax Minster

The Minster is rich in history, heritage, spirituality and architecture. Marvel at its beautiful stained glass and the simple elegance of its Commonwealth windows, the craftsmanship of the ornate font cover and box pews, 'Mousey' Thompson chairs in the Regimental Chapel and the Minster's stunning painted wooden ceiling.

The Minster is due to begin some major conservation work to the stonework in the tower and south aisle. In addition plans are being drawn up for the renewal of the heating system, following the recent publication of the Minster’s Sustainability Plan. Restoration work is also due to start on some of the memorials following the Minster’s inclusion in the Church of England’s Conservation Programme this year. The 2026 Heritage Open Days will feature displays describing the forthcoming works.

The Minster is the spiritual home of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment and proudly home to a number of its colour standards, including that of the Battle of Waterloo. It has many fine monuments, brasses and graves, including that of Anne Lister, who lived at nearby Shibden Hall, was baptised and worshipped here regularly. The Anne Lister Memorial Weekend runs from Sept 18th with a Memorial Service held at 7.30pm on Friday 18th Sept.
