Hedon - Walks around the town - Hedon Westlands
Market Hill Car Park, Hedon, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU12 8JE
As a Norman New Town Hedon was created to be a place of work, a port and place of safety from the fast flowing, and wide Humber estuary. Hedon did not appear in the Domesday Book but was carved out of the existing parish of Preston around 1130.It wasn’t to last as the tidal Haven, several miles from the estuary, and with little fresh water flowing through it, was blighted by continual silting up, on top of technology allowing the size of the vessels using it to increase. And once King Edward I purchased Wyke and developed the port of Kingston upon Hull in 1293, the traders abandoned Hedon. Our Mayor is the 679th in the position, and the Hedon Mace is the oldest in the country, being presented by King Henry V in 1415. The Town Hall dates from 1693, and SS. Mary and Joseph RC is a real gem as one of the oldest catholic parish churches. Lambert House and Ivy House are fine examples of houses of the era and Hedon Museum has the story of Hedon in documents and artefacts. Why not bring it all to life by talking one of the many walks with a knowledgable guide to tell the story that is before your eyes. Hedon has so much to see, if you know where to look!
