Join a historic building conservator for a unique glimpse into the different phases of Allan Bank, Grasmere's first villa, from Wordsworth's time as the first tenant in 1808, to the present day.

Historic building conservator Paul Lewis, head of the Cumbria Vernacular Buildings Group, will lead this tour around Allan Bank. His role as lead buildings conservator on the renovation of Allan Bank following a fire in 2011, gives him a unique insight into how the building has changed since its construction in the early nineteenth century. Discover the Georgian bones of Allan Bank as it looked during Wordsworth's brief tenancy between 1808 and 1811 and how the fashion for the neo Gothic, led the next owner, a wealthy merchant, to add his own flourishes. These additions include a unique chapel like structure in the garden, used as a billiards room and 'museum' to house the owner's collection of medieval stained glass, inspired by the legendary collecting habits of the eighteenth century Prime Minister Robert Walpole.
