How the Past Is Used to Shape the Present - Architecture Talk with Author Yuliia Niemova

Unity Place, Grafton Gate, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK9 1UP

  • 15 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A lecture exploring how architecture and cultural heritage across different times and regions have been used as tools of influence & control.

This lecture explores the dual role of cultural heritage - from the Colosseum in Ancient Rome to contemporary Ukrainian landmarks - not only as a vessel of historical memory, but also as a powerful tool of influence and control used by authorities across different eras.

We will examine how architecture and cultural symbols have been employed to impose ideologies and shape collective consciousness. A particular focus is placed on Ukrainian cultural heritage and its formation under historical pressures, from past to present.

Participants are invited into a space of critical reflection without imposing viewpoints, encouraging deeper understanding of how heritage can be both a cultural asset and a contested site.

The event takes place alongside the exhibition Faces of the Ukrainian Dream, where children share their hopes and dreams for the future. While the projects are separate, the workshop echoes the exhibition’s central message: the importance of freedom and culture in shaping the future we aspire to.

Led by Yuliia Niemova, author of the research project Cultural Heritage as a Tool of Propaganda, a graduate of the Media and Cultural Heritage program, and host of the Ukrainian radio show Palyanytsia Show, which explores topics of culture, history, and disinformation.
