Looks at the memorials found in our local churchyards and the stories they tell of those who lost their lives in war. Through names, dates, inscriptions and symbols carved in stone, this talk explores how families chose to remember their fallen.

Visitors will be welcome to look at the displays and are invited to walk the churchyards.

Two talks will be given during the day from our guest researcher Vincent Hewitt who will discuss the memorials found in our local churchyards and the stories they tell of those who lost their lives in war. Through names, dates, inscriptions and symbols carved in stone, the talks explore how families chose to remember their fallen, echoing the enduring promise: "We will remember them." It also considers the importance of our heritage work in recording, caring for and protecting these memorials, ensuring that the people they commemorate and the stories they represent are not forgotten by future generations.

Our churchyards are situated in an upland location and as such are subject to sudden variations in weather conditions. All persons should ensure that they are adequately prepared. Exercise caution in wet weather. Due to the age and steep topography, along with considerable settlement, great care is needed to avoid trips and hazards. Due diligence on your part is needed. Be prepared for overgrown areas and variations in ground conditions. DO NOT climb or lean on Masonry or Headstones/Memorials as they may be unstable. Please always supervise children.
