Mining heritage is about whole communities, not just those underground or processing ore. For Liskeard Unlocked, we’re mining connections —revealing how ordinary lives and livelihoods shape our shared story.

Mining heritage is a shared community story, shaped by ordinary lives and the industry that left its mark on people and place. It reaches far beyond those who worked underground or processed ore on the surface, embracing families, trades, transport, shops and services, and the everyday livelihoods that grew alongside mining and supported towns and villages over generations.

For Liskeard Unlocked, the World Heritage Site team have been ‘mining’ these connections and are delighted to be collaborating with Liskeard & District Museum, one of our Area Centres, as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

Visitors are invited to discover this story in our presentation at the museum, on display for the full duration of Heritage Open Days (during museum opening times). The presentation explores the lives of ordinary people who played a part in the mining story across the World Heritage Site, using examples from Area A9, the Caradon Mining District as well as further afield, to bring these connections to life.

It highlights the strong and lasting links between mining on Caradon Hill and the town of Liskeard, while also uncovering connections with working people across the wider World Heritage Site, from St Just in the west to Tavistock in the east.
