Living Landscape - Living Heritage with The Living Barracks
The Storehouse, Berwick Barracks, Ravensdowne, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 1DF
Taking inspiration from selected artefacts from the Town Museum’s collection master's students in Landscape Architecture from Edinburgh College of Art created this 15 minute film which brings the everyday histories contained within each object to life within the park proposals exploring more specifically some of the Walls’ flankers; small, enclosed spaces which were used to protect the flanks of the fortifications, built to defend the strategic border between Scotland and England.
The park projects consider the Town Walls themselves as an important piece of Living Heritage; picturing what the Walls would be like if they became even more alive with stories, people and ecologies, sometimes pushing ideas further than reality would currently allow, until maybe they could become reality.
The Living Barracks Project is a partnership between English Heritage, The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Northumberland County Council and BBHT. It is breathing new life into Berwick’s historic Barracks, restoring their place at the heart of the town’s cultural and community life. Ahead of the site’s full reopening in 2028, an inspiring programme of art, heritage and community projects is already unfolding - created with and for the people of Berwick, thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the UK Government’s Cultural Development Fund. Together, we’re rediscovering what the Barracks have been, will be and could become.
