Nenthead Village Walk
Mines Car Park, Nenthead, Alston, Cumbria, CA9 3NR
The ‘modern’ era of lead mining here began with the arrival of the London Lead Company in the early 1700s. This paternalistic company built a planned village for its workers 200 years ago in 1825. By the time the lead ran out zinc was a viable commodity; in 1896 the Vieille Montagne Zinc Company of Belgium moved in and employed a multinational workforce in this remote place in the hills.
Meet in Nenthead Mines car park (opposite the playground).
