Patterned Pasts: Reinterpreting the Brook Theatre Through Heritage Surface Design - a project by Matilda Flood
Intra, 337-341 High Street, Rochester, Kent, ME1 1DA
This project celebrates the rich Victorian and Edwardian craftsmanship of the Brook Theatre through illustration, research, and hands-on community workshops exploring traditional heritage crafts. The project will result in new fabric and wallpaper designs for the Brook Theatre’s restoration, with a final exhibition at INTRA ARTS, Chatham, Kent, during Heritage Open Days 2026.
Patterned Pasts: Reinterpreting The Brook Theatre Through Heritage Surface Design is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
A huge thank you to Medway Heritage Place, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and National Lottery players for making this opportunity possible. This is my first funded project, and I'm excited to begin this journey and work with the community to uncover and reinterpret the stories, patterns, and craftsmanship that make The Brook Theatre so special.
This is a legacy project that will extend into the coming years and define my practice as an emerging illustrator who wishes to work in the heritage sector.
