Prescot Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin - 800 years of history

The Parish Church of St Mary, the only Grade I listed building in Knowsley, boasts a very fine Jacobean roof, Saxon font, ancient oak chest and Parish registers that date from 1573. The remains of an earlier Chantry Chapel dated around 1400 can be seen, which is still in use today. One notable addition since the 1610 build is the fine tower with a peal of 8 bells built in 1729. St Mary's is steeped in history and is certainly well worth a visit.
After visiting the church, why not continue your walk through history and explore the old churchyard, itself a Celtic burial ground, with its War Cenotaph, BICC Memorial and VC War graves. Or stroll through the old market town of Prescot, which has its own long and interesting history - namely its own Court Leet and Toll Road into Liverpool, which was much smaller then and not yet the great city it was to become. You can follow the Town Trail to discover the second narrowest street in England and look out for the hidden sculptures representing the witches' spell from Shakespeare's Macbeth - how many can you find? Prescot is the home of the new Shakespeare North Theatre, Knowsley Safari Park and a unique Maritime 'Time Ball' - one of only 3 in England - which can be observed working once a day at 1300 hours.
