  • 14 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

You will see inside the newly restored & listed Signal Box, how this period station has changed little since 1900 despite the loss of the onsite Cattle Market and the related buildings with the rising use of the motor car.

Pulborough’s restored grade 2 listed 1879 Signal Box will be able to be accessed in small groups of visitors for the first time since restoration and closure in 2014.
The box is one of very few signal boxes that have retained all its old levers, its old and new block management equipment and its operating mechanisms under the signalman’s working area.
A leaflet devoted to the signal box will give you some details of its history and a description by a former Pulborough signalman of his working day. A full version of these are available on the internet address’ that are shown in the leaflet together with an early training film for signalmen.

The Station, which is free to access at any time was opened in 1859 with a new line from Petworth to London and soon became a major junction with new lines added. The impact and history of the station is told in a free Heritage day leaflet from the station or Visitor Centre and there is a slide show display opposite the Ticket Office and will be able to be expand upon by the On-Station Heritage guide with an emphasis on the social impact of the new technology of the railways on the people of Pulborough.
