An exciting opportunity to visit the Abbey Gateway building where Jane Austen went to school between 1785 and 1786.

Take a look inside this beautiful building and learn about its history from Reading Museum’s volunteers and staff.

Directions:
The Abbey Gateway is located opposite one of the entrances/ exit to the Forbury Gardens (by the cafe) Please ask at Reading Museum if have any problems locating it.

The Gateway has no step-free access and there are uneven steps and floors because this is a heritage site. Buggies and pushchairs can be stored on the ground floor. Please note that the Gateway is a listed building on 2 floors without a lift. If you have any mobility issues please contact the learning team at Reading Museum to discuss options before your visit.
