Sew your Signature on the Berwick Tablecloth with The Living Barracks
The KOSB , Berwick Barracks, Parade, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 1DF
This everyday piece of history records the simple meal given to Scottish officers at a Belgian farmhouse in August 1914, shortly before the Battle of Mons. As they left they signed a tablecloth as a memento of their visit which the family embroidered as a lasting memorial. Like the original Mons Tablecloth, this work is not about grand historical events. It is about hospitality, participation, remembrance and connection. All materials and instruction provided and all ages welcome.
The Living Barracks Project is a partnership between English Heritage, The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Northumberland County Council and BBHT. It is breathing new life into Berwick’s historic Barracks, restoring their place at the heart of the town’s cultural and community life. Ahead of the site’s full reopening in 2028, an inspiring programme of art, heritage and community projects is already unfolding - created with and for the people of Berwick, thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the UK Government’s Cultural Development Fund. Together, we’re rediscovering what the Barracks have been, will be and could become.
