This beautiful old chapel, little changed from when it was built during the life of John Wesley, and visited by him in 1788, it is still used for weekly worship. An extension added in 1882-3 for a boiler room and vestry now houses the village museum.

This is a unique opportunity to visit one of the oldest Methodist Churches in the world still being used for weekly worship. Tucked away down a lane behind the Methodist Hall, many locals are unaware if its existence. When John Wesley visited in 1788 the crowd was so great that they could not all get into the chapel so Wesley stood on a mounting block outside to address them. Those visitors would probably still recognise the majority of the chapel today, both inside and out.

The adjoining museum is packed with information and images relating to village life and, to celebrate the 240th anniversary of the chapel, features an exhibition about the churches and religious buildings of Shelley, both past and present.
